The CLIMATEWORK MAINE summit last week was a major success! Three members of our Climate Center team (including ClimateWork Maine board member and GMRI Business Climate Action Program Manager Jared Wildwistle) attended to share insights and learn the latest about how organizations around Maine are making moves around climate action. Kudos to Wymans, ReVision Energy, and Tanbark Molded Fiber Products who were all awarded for their climate action leadership! We loved meeting so many new, motivated organizations, and look forward to being a resource for businesses looking to drive adaptation and emissions reduction strategies in a warmer world.

We develop and deliver collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges.
About us
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) pioneers collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges. Our dynamic fusion of science, education, and community gives us range to effect change from multiple directions, while our objectivity and commitment to collaboration make us the go-to organization for marine communities grappling with contentious issues, management transitions, and new business systems. GMRI unlocks science mysteries to inform better decisions about how we steward, use, and enjoy our precious ocean resources. We work with fishermen to develop tools that let them fish smarter and get more value for their catch. We open doors to think about new sustainable and renewable uses of the marine environment. We are making a long-term investment in science literacy as the cornerstone of a 21st century ocean economy by providing programs to ignite the curiosity, ambition, innovation, and problem-solving potential of Maine's next generation.

Aroostook County educators joined GMRI staff in Washburn, Maine for a day long experience full of data-rich activities from our new curriculum that explores how climate change is impacting Maine's $200m potato farming industry. Educators connected with industry leaders at Porter Farms and Penobscot McCrum, LLC's potato processing plant for a real hands-on learning experience that will equip them with another tool for teaching climate literacy to students using locally relevant subject matter.

📣 Reminder! 📣 The Gulf of Maine coast will see the highest tides of the month this week. In Portland, high tide times are 11:20 pm on Tuesday, May 7 and 12:08 am on Thursday, May 9. It’s rare for coastal storms in May to cause large storm surges, but rises in sea levels are leading to water levels that are persistently about 0.5-1ft above the predicted tide (remember, NOAA tide predictions are based on 1983-2001 mean sea level). This means tides alone may cause minor flooding overnight this week. Be sure to monitor the weather forecast for onshore winds or low-pressure systems that may cause an additional rise in water level. Learn more about coastal flooding and see our recommendations for how to prepare your home, business, or community. https://lnkd.in/gtPNCR7Q
