About us

We provide leadership, connections, education and resources to Maine employers to promote diversity in the workplace. The Diversity Hiring Coalition will focus on three strategic areas. Each area has a specific vision for their work: Aging Workforce: To provide resources and education to organizations to bridge the generational divide in the workplace. Racial and Ethnic Diversity: To provide education, resources, and networking opportunities to attract, retain and promote racial and ethnically diverse talent in Southern and Central Maine. LGBTQ community: To promote and support workplace cultures where all people are welcomed, respected, and made to feel safe, as their authentic self, inclusive of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. The Diversity Hiring Coalition is an affiliate of the SHRM Maine State Council, which serves and advances human resource professionals throughout the state. The Diversity Hiring Coalition is an endorsing sponsor of the Maine HR Convention.

  • Unlocking the Power of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Insights from Annual Meeting: Creating Workplace Cultures of Belonging. We embarked on an enlightening journey. We posed five key questions to our team and received five invaluable answers, each shedding light on how we can foster a culture of belonging, make our DEI commitment genuine, and measure our progress effectively. Creating a Culture of Belonging: We discovered that creating a culture of belonging is about listening to every voice, appreciating differences, and welcoming an ever-evolving space. It means making room for all individuals to bring their authentic selves to work, providing the necessary resources for them to thrive. Leadership's Role: Leadership plays a pivotal role in driving DEI initiatives. To feel supported, we need leadership to lead by example, demonstrate empathy, and walk the talk. They should set clear expectations, allocate resources, and support DEI initiatives across all levels. Assessing Progress: Metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as employee engagement, retention, and survey feedback provide insights into our DEI progress. Regular surveys, stay interviews, and exit interviews are crucial tools to evaluate our effectiveness and identify shortcomings. Genuine Commitment: Our commitment to DEI must be genuine, not just a passing trend. This involves integrating DEI into our culture, long-term strategic plans, and daily practices. It means demonstrating authenticity, fostering relationships, and keeping the conversation alive. Takeaways: The most important takeaway is that DEI is not a destination but an ongoing journey. It's about making DEI an integral part of our organizational DNA. It requires transparency, resource allocation, and a commitment to learning and adaptation. As we move forward, these insights guide us in developing a comprehensive action plan. We'll engage leadership, set clear goals, implement feedback mechanisms, allocate resources, provide education, and emphasize accountability. Most importantly, we'll integrate DEI into our culture and demonstrate the genuineness of our commitment in every action we take. We invite you to join us in this journey, as together, we strive to create a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. ---
